Frequently Asked Questions

At Pocket Tots, learning unfolds slowly, intentionally, and in relationship with the world around us. Families often ask questions about rest, celebrations, and the way learning is documented here. This page offers a closer look into my philosophy, practices, and the commitments that guide my work as the sole educator and owner of Pocket Tots Childcare.

How does rest and nap time work at Pocket Tots?

Rest is an essential part of our daily rhythm. After busy mornings exploring outdoors, children’s bodies and minds need time to restore, and this also gives me a time for  administrative tasks and cleanup during my work day. Quiet time runs from approximately 1:00 to 3:00 in a calm, cozy space with soft light and gentle sounds. Some children fall asleep, while others rest quietly, giving their bodies a chance to slow down. After about an hour and a half, children who are awake are offered a quiet activity. By 3:00, I gently shift the enviornment to 'wake up mode" by turning off music and turning on lights. If a child continues to sleep through activity, I trust that their body and mind need that extra rest. I believe these peaceful pauses are just as valuable as active play, helping children recharge for the rest of the day with me and their families.

I know  bedtimes are  often a challenge for families at home (been there!), so I encourage plenty of  outdoor activity, opportunities for connection, and consistent bedtime and wake-up routines for children.  These can help create smoother evenings for your family.

Why don’t children bring home many crafts or projects?

Learning here is not focused on producing things to take home. Instead, it is rooted in the experiences children live through and the relationships they build with each other, the land, and the world around them.

Rather than sending home piles of crafts or worksheets, I focus on documenting learning through photographs, stories, and reflective writings that capture children’s voices, curiosity, and discoveries. The learning that happens here is collaborative and often unfolds over time through conversations, questions, experimentation, and shared experiences.

Much of our play happens with natural and reusable materials that can return to the land when we are finished. I think carefully about waste, consumerism, and the ways traditional ideas about early learning can sometimes prioritize product over process.

My ongoing professional commitments include reflecting on neoliberal influences in education, sustainability, and unlearning older approaches to teaching and learning. Unlearning is a process. I do not always get it right, but my learning and commitments keep me returning, reflecting, and trying again.

I value being challenged and welcome thoughtful conversations with families. If something does not align with your own experiences or expectations, I hope you feel comfortable approaching me to discuss it.

How are holidays celebrated at Pocket Tots?

I do not celebrate holidays in the traditional sense in the program.  Instead, I focus on celebrating the rhythm of the seasons and the changes we experience together throughout the year.

We welcome spring through planting and noticing new life, mark autumn through harvest and gathering, and embrace the slower pace and comforts of winter. Children who spend several years here begin to notice and anticipate these seasonal rhythms themselves, returning to familiar experiences with new understandings each year.

These seasonal moments become meaningful celebrations of growth, connection, belonging, and place.

I also try to create opportunities for families to come together outside of the busy rhythm of daily drop-offs and pick-ups. Community gatherings, shared meals, seasonal brunches, or simple outdoor get-togethers allow families time to connect with one another in a slower and more meaningful way.

Birthdays and traditional or secular holidays may still be acknowledged, but celebrations are kept simple, inclusive, and grounded in togetherness rather than production or performance.

Why do you choose a multi-age childcare model?

Multi-age care is something I feel deeply passionate about. Over the years, I have worked in a variety of childcare settings and, through those experiences, I have grown to deeply value the benefits of multi-age care and the relationships that emerge within it.

In a multi-age environment, younger children are surrounded by older peers who model language, problem-solving, care, and confidence. Older children, in turn, develop empathy, leadership, patience, and a strong sense of belonging as they help guide and support younger children throughout the day.

At the same time, older children are often inspired by the younger children around them. The curiosity, wonder, creativity, and different ways of thinking that younger children bring can encourage older children to slow down, revisit ideas, and remain open to new ways of being and learning. Relationships move in all directions here, and every child has something valuable to offer the group.

Rather than separating children strictly by age and development, I value creating a community where children can move through their early years together, building long-term relationships and shared experiences over time. This often allows children to feel secure and connected, while also learning at their own pace without pressure to perform or keep up with rigid expectations.

A multi-age setting also reflects the way children naturally exist in families and communities. Children are given opportunities to collaborate, negotiate, observe, nurture, and participate in the daily rhythms of life together.

One of the most meaningful parts of this work has been watching children grow into mentors and helpers for younger peers, while still being supported themselves. The relationships that develop in multi-age care often become one of the strongest foundations for learning, confidence, and community.

Why are your hours 8:30 to 4:30 when so many families need care outside those hours?

While I recognize that many families rely on extended hours or their care needs, I have found that shorter days are often more supportive of children’s overall well-being. Long hours in care can be overstimulating, just as a full day in an office is draining for adults who already have mature coping skills. Children, still developing socially and emotionally, benefit from a balanced rhythm. I encourage families to reflect on how much time their child spends in group care and, where possible, find ways to balance it with time at home or with family. I understand that every family’s situation is unique, and it is not always simple. Still, I share this value so you can better understand the thoughtful care and intentionality I bring to my program.
